Start with a water balance

Water problems on a mine site are rarely solved at the pump. They are solved by knowing, across a full annual cycle, how much water arrives as rainfall and groundwater, how much the operation consumes, how much is held in storage and how much has to leave. That balance sizes every pump, pipeline, sump and pond that follows, and it identifies the months when the site is genuinely exposed. We build that picture first, from site rainfall records and real catchment areas rather than rules of thumb, and design to the wet season instead of the annual average.

Keeping water away from the working face

The cheapest water to manage is the water that never reaches the pit. Perimeter diversion drains, catch berms and bunds intercept surface runoff on the high side before it can enter the excavation, cutting both the volume to be pumped and the erosion that flow would otherwise cause. What does reach the pit is collected in staged sumps and lifted out through a pump and pipeline system sized for the peak rather than the mean, with standby capacity — a dewatering system without redundancy is a production stoppage waiting for its first failure. Where groundwater inflow is significant, bore dewatering lowers the table ahead of the advancing face.

Sediment, discharge and the compliance record

Water leaving a mine site is regulated water. Sediment traps, settling ponds and, where the receiving environment requires it, treatment are designed so that discharge meets the standards set by Ghana's Environmental Protection Agency and the conditions attached to your permits. Turbidity, pH and flow are monitored and logged, so compliance can be demonstrated from records rather than argued after an inspection. Storage is managed with the freeboard the wet season demands, and the whole system is reviewed each year against what the previous season actually delivered.
